Our history
Citadel insurance p.l.c. originates from the successful business partnership between Assitalia Spa of Italy and its former agents in Malta – Citadel Insurance Services Ltd which was set up in November 1989. These two companies were joined by the Malta Development Fund Ltd and Pater Holding Ltd as shareholders in establishing Citadel Insurance plc.
The establishment of Citadel Insurance plc is a landmark in the history of insurance business in Malta, being the first conversion of an insurance agency into an insurance company. Citadel Insurance plc was established as a public limited company on the 19th of June 1997 and commenced its operations on the 1st of September 1997.
On the 9th of March 1998 Citadel became a composite insurance company after authorisation by the Malta Financial Services Authority to transact Life Insurance business. At the end of 1999, Citadel launched the PERLA range of Life Insurance Products, consisting of the PERLA Retirement and the PERLA Protection Plans. The PERLA Retirement Plan was the first regular premium unit-linked plan ever launched in Malta.
In October 2011, Citadel expanded its product portfolio by establishing its subsidiary Citadel Health Insurance Agency Ltd enrolled to transact health insurance products. In April 2016, Citadel Insurance plc has strengthened its insurance offering to include private medical insurance as part of its product range.

Brand Essence and Evolution
As with all progressive companies, Citadel has always operated with a strategic view to the future and the adoption of its new corporate identity back in 2005 has built on an established reputation for well planned, innovative products and services. In today’s progressive world, there is always the need to modernise and stay one step ahead, and a fresh, dynamic outlook has been encapsulated in the company’s forward looking new corporate identity.
The current corporate logo embodies Citadel’s philosophy of a customer-oriented company by positioning the customer at the very heart of all its operations. As can be seen in the logo, three concentric dotted ‘C’s rotate around the customer because every department at Citadel is focused on the customers’ needs, whether they are an individual, SME or large organisation. The original thinking behind the logo was based on Citadel’s need to express the protective aspects of its business in a contemporary sense.
The new logo projects the unifying aspects of the insured with the insurer and delivers a corporate dynamism which is both contemporary and futuristic. The symbol ‘Citadel’ has been released from the box it previously sat in and has been redesigned to promote a freedom of choice for the consumer whilst projecting a memorable, fresh and pleasing approach to the various insurance policies that Citadel offers. It’s about change, movement, rotation, protection and investment. It’s about the customer and Citadel’s insurance promise.
